Slimy Futures
How do we grow material from bacteria?
Slimy Futures is a materials research based project that investigates the potential of Kombucha and Agar as sustainable material alternatives. We explore a range of biodegradable Kombucha paper, leather and Agar bioplastic. Our materials are exclusively produced from natural and local resources available to us in London and Mauritius.
Fermentation
Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria & Yeast + Sugar Nutrients + Acetic Acid + Black Tea.
Growing
Bacteria feeds onto the sugar nutrients, spinning small nano-fibres of pure cellulose together, forming a sheet on the surface of the liquid.
Harvesting
The sustainable byproduct is harvested from the liquid.

Dyeing
The material is washed using ecological soap. We use natural dyes throughout our process to enable the material to safely biodegrade.
Drying
The material is either air-dried or placed on a recycled material board. The material is made up of 90% water at this point.
Coating
The material is coated with oil to protect the surface.
